Wow, I am new here and new to Colonel T.N. Dupuy's works.

I have been an amature historian for about 25 years and a miliatry war gamer for just as long.

Just recently in one of my war game groups (Europa and Master Europa) there was some heavy talk on OLI, CEV and other works by Col. Dupuy. Sparking my interest (which has always been in military war game design) I started to do some research on Col. Dupuy and much to my joy I found three of his works for under 15.00.

Those being "Numbers, Predictions, & War", "Understanding War: History and Theory Of Combat", and "The Evolution of Weapons and Warfare"

So far only NPW has arrived and I have greedily read through the first 6 chapters.

Some of my war gaming friends have stated that at some of his theories were applied to an old SPI war game called "War in Europe" which was created back in 1976 and is one of my favorite titles.

At any rate there are a lot of posts here and some very interesting readings, beside finding out that what I am learning about the QJM model has been updated by some thing called TNDM and all those databases.

How does one get access to the databases here?

I have some of the Master Europa data in OLI and CEV format and I was going to try to convert it to a database type of format.

It looks like I need to try to get "Attrition: Forecasting Battle Casualties and Equipment Losses in Modern War", however is this applicable to WW2 or WW1?

I am very interested in these theories and calculations.

If you want the TNDM, you have to piece it together. Letting people use the TNDM is part of their business, and costs $93,000 a year. Unfortunatly, Trevor Dupuy's ability to run a profitable business was hurt by how freely he gave out the QJM formula in his books. They can't really afford to do the same with the TNDM.

That being said, some of the changes that makes the QJM into the TNDM are contained in the TNDM newsletters, which are available on this site.

And yes, you should get Attrition.

Finally, dont't be discouraged by long turn around time on replies to some posts.

They are often pretty busy, and given how "exciting' the international situation is at the moment, you can probably understand why.

Be patient, and I am sure you while be rewarded by some very entertaining and insightful posts.

Joseph,

Thank you for post your reply. I can afford "Attrition" and will purchase that soon. I have downloaded the newsletters (at least the ones in pdf format) and will print those off so I can read them.

I also found (for free) the HERO databases. I believe I will have to purchase the QJM databases on this site.

My goodness the price is very expensive for this database system. Is it because of the predicive nature that causes the price to be so high?

My own interest are not in prediction, but in understanding the past, most notablly WW2.

Even though Colonel Dupuy put the formula's in the book, it still takes several readings and several sheets of paper and pen (at least for me) to understand (truely) how to use and implement to derive at my own TLI, OLI and CEV's. But it's only for my own analysis and insight that I do this.

Thanks again.
