Someone just sent me the following email with a picture of a Panther attached:I have been trying to determine the identity of the Panther Ausf. D “914” as shown in the attached photograph. I think that it must be one of the eight headquarters vehicles of Panzer-Regiment 39’s Stab.Kp. I have not come across any information online or in my library on the numbering scheme for these vehicles, though a colleague has suggested R01-03, 911-915. Alternatively, the number style and size suggest an association with Pz.Abt.52, with these being Abteilung 52 Stabskompanie vehicles: I01-I03, 911-915. A third postulation is that they were attached to the Nachrichten Zug (I01, I02 and I03 - OR - II01, II02 and II03) or the Aufklarung Zug (911, 912, 913, 914, 915).
I tried to post this question on your Forum but unfortunately new registrations are not being accepted. If possible, I would appreciate your thoughts on this vehicle. I ask as another colleague of mine is producing profiles of various panzers for his publications and wishes to include this very unique and colourful beast.
Many thanks, and again, congratulations on the achievement of publishing the last word on this battle.
Cheers,
David
I cannot attach the photo to this forum, but it is a side shot of a Panther D on flat ground with a group of deployed vehicles in the background. Very noticeable on the side of the turret is the number 914.
