Vatutin wanted to attack the Germans in May, 1943. Was that realistic? I noticed in Mr. Zetterling's book (p. 195) that the the total number of German tanks and assault guns on the Eastern Front as of 30 April was 2606 and 3434 as of 30 June. I don't know if this includes tanks being repaired. According to Mueller-Hillebrand, on 1 May 1943 the entire German army possessed 5739 tanks and assault guns (4465 operational), while on 1 July 1943 they possessed 7517 and 6291, respectively. So, clearly, at least in tanks, the Germans were weaker in early May than in early July, but there are a lot of other factors to consider.

Does anyone know the condition of Army Group Center and AG South, particularly of their armored divisions, in late April/early May, 1943?
