Note that this is the first organization, with the ‘mixed’ fusilier/panzerjaeger battalion that was also known as the ‘Schnell Batallion.’ In later 1943 the organization was changed, with a separate panzerjaeger battalion being formed from the former ‘schnell’ battalion. Typically the change was made by transferring the panzerjaeger company from the fusilier battalion to a new ‘mixed’ panzerjaeger battalion. In theory the panzerjaeger company was replaced in the fusilier battalion by a second bicycle-mounted rifle company, but many divisions never had the time or manpower available to do so. The new separate panzerjaeger battalions formed were organized as:
1106/Stb.u.Stbs.Kp.Pz.Jg.Abt.(gem.)., headquarters and headquarters company, mixed panzerjaeger battalion
1140n/s.Pz.Jg.Kp.(mot.), heavy AT company, motorized (KStN 1140 was also used)
1149/Pz.Jg.Kp.(Stu.G.), assault gun company (variations with different KStN numbers were utilized, depending on whether the company was equipped with 10 or 14 guns, and according to which type of equipment, Stu.G. or Pz.Jg.38t, was used).
198/Fla.Kp.(mot.), AAA company, motorized (this was the standard 9-gun 3.7cm company mounted on half-tracked chassis, other variations with different KStN were utilized with towed guns and some companies were equipped with 2cm guns).
Some infantry divisions in France and the Low Countries organized stronger battalions, with a fourth company equipped with Marder-type panzerjager. These companies often appear to have been organized to take advantage of the availability of the locally produced modifications based upon captured French tank chassis. Virtually all were destroyed in the battles in France in summer and fall of 1944 and were not reconstituted. Finally, under an order from the Organization Section of the Army General Staff (OKH/Gen.St.d.H./Org.Abt.) issued on 10 October 1944, all panzerjaeger battalions were to form a Grenadier Begleitzug (infantry escort platoon) to provide close infantry support and protection for the assault gun company. Very few of these apparently ever completed organization and it appears that a formal KStN was never assigned.
Please note that these are the ‘standard’ KStN numbers. Many individual variations existed for divisions formed at different times and locations, and with different equipment.
