During the battle of Britain the British defeated the German fighters over Britain. A short time later the British made some large fighter sweeps over France. The Germans defeated them.

A similarly arguement could be said at the start of WW2, where US and British pilots were greatly defeated by the Japanese. After a while the situation changed.

I am wondering if any studies have been done on the effectiveness of the different pilots and fighters during WW2.
