I heard a story, which I have been unable to confirm, that the first Campaign model, Atlas, designed by RAC in the 1960's, was tested to the France 1940 campaign. The French won, even crossing the Rhine. They then concluded that "Military history has no relevance to modern combat."

Is anyone else aware of this "validation" and can confirm the veracity of this story? While Atlas is no longer in use, some of its formula's and design concpets are used in other models in the business.

Chris:

I recently came across a Thesis comparing ATLAS, QJM and the RAND "Situational Force Scoring" model. Its all based upon data in KOSAVE II and the various models abilities to predicit casulties or combat power loss. Interesting conclusions. Author is Ramazan Gozel...Thesis is "Fitting Firepower Score Models to the Battle of Kursk". Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA.
