In QJM, casualties are calculated "per day". However, not all that time is spent in combat (24 hours). For example, in Vol 1 #3 newsletter, the battalion level combats are heavily weighted to 6 hours.Should casualty estimates on a per day basis be modified to reflect shorter combat times ? In other words, if I am trying to model casualties at a battalion level, the "casualties per day" calculation should be modified to reflect shorted times of combat ? Mad Dog

If a battle lasts only 6 hours, then casualties are 1/4th of the daily rate. So, calculations of less than a day are often done. If you look at the battalion-level discussion in our newsletters, you will see that most of the engagements were less than a day and we ran them that way for the validation. One problem we had was that for engagements that lasted less then 4 hours, the casualties were simply too low. Our simple fix was that we never reduced casualties to below 1/6th of the daily level (meaning a 30 minute fight is calculated the same as a 4 hour fight). This seems to work.Right now, there is another model testing effort going on for company-level engagements and many of those are short engagements. We shall how it works for that.

To make sure I understand correctly, the BLD is for battles that typically involve 1000 men or less, not necessarily battles that involve a few battalions ?Mad Dog
