Chris,

I am reviewing in detail Volume II of "USE OF HISTORICAL DATA IN EVALUATING MILITARY EFFECTIVENESS," which I purchased from TDI some time ago.

This volume contains a description of 42, World War Two engagements, with a breakout of the forces involved by numbers and Weapons type (in general), along with the results of the Engagemenr in terms of casualties and advance rate.

In looking at them in detail, I see much less detail than was provided in the Soviet Breakthrough Operations study, specifically the Sychevka offensive in AUG 1942.

For instance, in Engagement 1, Salerno on 11 SEP 43, the description states "it is assumed that approximately one-half of the 16th Panzer Division was engaged on the defensive, whille ..." With that, how accurate can I assume the specific force composition on Page 7 is?

Additionally, the Weapons breakout is of a most general nature, unlike the specifics for the Sychevka operation -- numbers for each type of tank and mm size of gun type were provided.

I am most puzzled by the Naval Artillery & aircraft breakout -- both the numbers of each and how the OLI was computed (computations seems very different that would be expected from WWII OLI values presented in NPW and the Opposed Advance Rate study).

Is there precise detail elsewhere? If not, what were the assumptions & rationale behind these values?

Please advise. Thanks.
